TURKEY - Unearthing the Past
Sample 19-Day Program
Day Eight
Visit the excavated
city of Aphrodisias, one of Turkey's most important archeological sites.
In Roman times, Aphrodisias was the home for a school of sculptors, which
accounts for the magnificent collection excavated from the site. We will visit
the local museum and view these treasures. Afterwards, we continue to
Pamukkale, "the Cotton Fortress", and noted spa in ancient times. Here,
solidified calcium from the water has formed "frozen waterfalls" which lead to
shallow pools -- a sight one will never forget. Swim in the hotel's natural hot
pool.
Day Nine
Morning at you leisure
to enjoy another swim in the hot pools. Then, tour the ruins of the ancient
Hieropolis. This town was a cure center founded about 190 BC by Eumenes II,
king of Pergamun, which prospered under the Romans and even more under the
Byzantines. It had a large Jewish community and an early Christian church.
Hieropolis contains perhaps the biggest cemetary in Asia Minor, with tombs
dating from the Hellenistic era to the early Christian period. In the
afternoon, depart for Antalya, driving through the Taurus mountains, pine
forests and cotton fields to the Mediterranean coast. The spectacular scenery
will help make the journey an unforgettable experience. Check-in to a
comfortable hotel. Evening at your leisure.
